Custom Knifemaker Profile: John Wilmot

Iconic South African Knifemaker, a master craftsman and valued member of the Knifemakers' Guild Of Southern Africa, passed away in December 2022.

John always had an interest in knives and started making his own at a young age using his father's tools. After completing his schooling, he was employed by the Department of Agriculture and trained as a civil engineer. He decided on early retirement in 1995 and relocated to the Eastern Cape with the aim of concentrating on his knifemaking hobby. The following year he joined the SA Knifemakers Guild and soon after started specializing in folding knives.

High quality materials such as Damascus steel, anodised titanium as well as local and rare imported woods were used. The perfectionist in John strove for improvement with every knife, making them exquiste, mastercrafted collectors' items as well as working knives. John was a respected, admired name in the industry and most importantly, is missed by everyone in the knifemaking family.
